Build Open Graph tags
What Open Graph tags do
When someone shares your link on Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp or X/Twitter, those platforms read your page's Open Graph tags to build a preview card with a title, description, and image. Without these tags, social platforms guess — and the guesses are usually bad.
Image best practices
- Recommended size: 1200×630 pixels. The official aspect ratio for the largest social card format.
- Use absolute URLs. Relative paths break in social previews.
- Under 5 MB. Bigger images may not load in previews.
- JPG, PNG, or WebP. SVG is not supported on most platforms.
Frequently asked questions
Do I still need OG tags if I have a Twitter card?
X/Twitter falls back to OG tags if no Twitter-specific ones exist. But Twitter cards offer more control. Use both for maximum coverage.
How long should OG title be?
Up to 60 characters typically. Anything longer may be truncated in some platforms' previews.
Why does the image not show?
Most common cause: image is not publicly reachable, or the URL is relative. Run Facebook's Sharing Debugger to see what is happening.
How long does it take for changes to show?
Most platforms cache previews aggressively. Facebook updates within an hour, but you can force refresh via their debugger.
Do I need OG tags for SEO?
Not directly for ranking. But social sharing brings traffic, and good previews boost click-through. Indirectly very useful for SEO.
