What makes a great meta title?

Your meta title is the most important on-page SEO element. It's the blue clickable link people see on Google, and it tells search engines what your page is about. A weak title costs you traffic; a strong one earns you clicks even when you rank below competitors.

The 5 rules of high-performing titles

  1. Put the main keyword near the front. Google weighs the first words more, and so do human eyes scanning search results.
  2. Stay under 60 characters (or ~600 pixels). Longer titles get cut off, which makes your result look unfinished and reduces clicks.
  3. Make it useful, not just keyword-stuffed. "Buy Shoes Shoes Best Shoes" ranks for nothing in 2026. Write like a human.
  4. Add a click-trigger modifier. Words like free, 2026, guide, vs, or numbers boost click-through rate.
  5. Include your brand at the end — separated with |, - or ·. Builds recognition over time.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a meta title be?

The accepted sweet spot is 50–60 characters, or about 600 pixels wide. Google truncates anything longer in desktop search results.

Does Google always show the title I write?

No. Google rewrites meta titles about 30% of the time, especially when it thinks the title does not match page content or query intent well.

Should I include my brand name in the title?

Yes, but at the end. For example: Main Topic | Your Brand. Including your brand builds recognition over time.

What is the difference between a title tag and an H1?

The title tag appears in browser tabs and Google results. The H1 is the visible headline on the page. They can be similar but do not have to be identical.

Will adding the year to my title hurt me later?

Slightly. Update year-based titles annually, or use evergreen modifiers like Updated or Complete Guide.
