Meta description limits explained

Google shows roughly 155–160 characters of your meta description on desktop. Mobile sometimes shows less (~120). Anything beyond gets cut off mid-sentence.

Frequently asked questions

Does description length affect ranking?

Not directly. But truncated descriptions look unfinished, hurting click-through rate, which can indirectly affect rankings.

Why does Google cut off descriptions?

Search results have limited screen space. Google shows enough to give a preview, then cuts the rest.

Should I always max out the length?

No. Use only as much as you need to make the page sound compelling. A tight 130-character description often beats a padded 160-character one.

Does Google sometimes ignore my description?

Yes, about 30 percent of the time. If your description does not match the user query well, Google may pull text from the page instead.

How do I count emojis?

Most emojis count as 1–2 characters in length checkers, but Google may render them as 0 width or strip them. Avoid relying on emojis.
