Check title length
Why title length matters more than you think
Google measures meta titles in pixels, not characters. A title with many wide letters (W, M, capitals) can hit the truncation point before a 60-character title with narrow letters does. This tool estimates both.
The pixel rule
Desktop Google shows titles up to about 600 pixels. Beyond that, your title is cut off with "...". On mobile, the limit varies by device. Staying under 60 characters is a safe bet across all screens.
When titles get truncated
- Lots of uppercase letters push pixel count up faster.
- Wide characters (W, M, @) take ~11px each, narrow ones (i, l, 1) ~3px.
- Brand at the end is sacrificed first. Make sure the keyword is on the left.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum title length for Google?
About 60 characters or 600 pixels on desktop. Mobile sometimes allows more, sometimes less. Stay under 60 characters to be safe across devices.
Why does Google measure in pixels?
Because letters have different widths. "WWW" takes much more space than "iii", even though both are 3 characters.
What happens if my title is too long?
Google truncates with an ellipsis. The cutoff usually lands mid-word, which looks unfinished and reduces clicks.
Does Google sometimes rewrite my title?
Yes, about 30 percent of the time. Common reasons: title is too long, does not match page content, or is too keyword-stuffed.
Can I use special characters in titles?
Yes. Bullets (•), pipes (|), dashes (-) all work fine. Avoid emojis unless they really earn their space.
